Dental Implants: What Are They and What’s the Process Like?

Tooth loss affects millions of Americans every year. Missing teeth can make eating and speaking a challenge and can take a toll on your self-confidence. Untreated tooth loss can lead to many other issues, too, such as gum disease and heart disease. Losing a tooth can also alter your bite and make your remaining teeth more susceptible to damage and decay.

There are many tooth replacements from which you can choose, depending on your needs, goals, and lifestyle. However, dental implants are the gold standard for treating tooth loss because they’re permanent, promote bone health, and replicate natural teeth in appearance and function. At Loftus Family Dentistry, we offer custom-made dental implants to restore your smile and oral health.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant permanently replaces a missing tooth, from root to crown. It consists of three pieces: the implant post, abutment, and artificial tooth––which can be a single crown or denture. Your dentist surgically places the implant into the empty tooth socket, promoting jawbone health and preventing bone loss. The abutment connects the implant post and the artificial tooth. And, of course, the artificial tooth is visible and functional, just like a natural tooth.

What Does the Dental Implant Process Involve?

Once we determine a dental implant is right for you, we examine and take impressions of your mouth to ensure the precise location and position of the implant. The dentist then administers a local anesthetic to numb the area, so you don’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

When you’re ready, we surgically place the implant post in the jaw below the gumline. The jawbone must grow around the implant to secure it through a process known as osseointegration, which can take a few months. Once the jaw and gums heal, we attach your artificial tooth to the abutment and implant post. And voila, your new and improved smile is ready for action!
