Dental Crowns and Bridges in Dallasman smiling

Dental crowns and bridges are popular restorations that help patients regain lost oral function and improve the appearance of a smile affected by diseased, damaged, or lost teeth.

As more extensive restorations than fillings, crowns and bridges must be custom made to fit properly in one’s mouth and in between teeth. While the restorations are made in dental laboratories from similar materials, they serve different purposes.

At Loftus Family Dentistry, we help Dallas, TX patients fall in love with their smiles with our beautifully crafted, natural-looking dental restorations.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is basically a tooth-shaped cap. This restoration may be crafted from metal alloys, all-porcelain, or porcelain fused over metal.

A crown is used to cover the entire biting surface of a damaged tooth or as a prosthetic tooth that is attached to a dental implant. Crowns are especially useful when a patient’s broken or diseased tooth can be saved but requires repair to restore the tooth to its proper size and shape.

For instance, a crown will cover and protect a tooth structure affected by severe decay or even hold the broken pieces of a tooth together. Beyond restorations, dental crowns may be created to serve as a prosthetic tooth that will be attached to a dental implant. In either case, crowns provide a durable biting surface for chewing food while also supporting the position of adjacent teeth.

What Are Dental Bridges?woman smiling

Bridges are a series of connected dental crowns. These restorations are replacements for lost teeth. A bridge connects the gaps between missing teeth by anchoring to biological teeth. A bridge may replace up to four consecutive teeth.

Like crowns, bridges will provide a biting surface for oral function, restore the appearance of a smile, and support neighboring teeth so that they do not collapse or shift into empty tooth sockets. Bridges may be constructed from metal alloys like gold and silver or with ceramics. Porcelain fused to metal is also a popular option.
